In July, Governor Gavin Newsom issued an executive order to state agencies addressing homeless encampments across California. This order requires California cities to clear encampments and could lead to citations for those who remain. This initiative to help solve California’s growing homelessness concerns puts immense pressure on cities, organizations like VRM, and those experiencing homelessness.
The pressing question of where these people will go once their encampments are cleared is loud, and we want to be part of the solution. We are preparing to expand our shelter capacity to offer more beds and more support for those in need. This will ensure that those impacted by the executive order will have a safe place to stay and access to essential services.
But the increase in demand will put a significant strain on our resources. Visalia City Councilman Steve Nelsen estimates there are about 1,600 people in the city’s homeless population. Your support is crucial during this time. We need to expand our staff to enhance our outreach and response capabilities, but we cannot grow without your help.
